From the beginning of time ancient peoples gathered and told stories. It was common practice to have Elders of the community whose wisdom embraced healing, be the one that was called upon for all things spiritual. The methodology was simple. The Elder would administer by placing his or her hands on areas that seemed to lack energy. This would begin the process of promoting circulation, as it was their belief that pain came from "emotional blockages."
My introduction to massage was much more intense. After years of suffering from Migraine headaches and lower back pain and taking pain medication, I met a Chiropractor who was able to give me some relief. Through encouragement from several of my friends, I decided to go to massage school. This led to two trips to China to learn Ancient methods of healing as well as taking classes from different Master teachers of massage. Soon after I established my own Healing Arts Center and my life changed forever, as I no longer suffer from Migraine headaches.
Touch therapy, Reiki, Acupressure, Shiatsu, Myofasial Release, Cranio-Sacral, Deep Tissue and Swedish massage, all of these modalities offer comfort at many levels. It is my experience that we hold "memory" (memory could be anything from Whiplash to an abusive childhood.) in the muscles and depending on our history many of those memories store emotional pain that manifest in different chronic discomforts.
During massage it is evident where the muscles contract there is unpleasant memory and given the proper touch, will release it and relax the tension. Often no dialogue is necessary. Simple stretching and kneading helps relieve the tension and a healing takes place.
I suggest to my clients that they establish a routine and make time to get massages on a regular basis just for stress management. It is enjoyable as well as healthy. I also encourage my clients to find a therapist that is very knowledgeable in anatomy and understands chronic pain.
